Miquel Barceló first traveled to Africa in 1988. The immediate impact the land and its people had on him brought him back year after year, on a quest to absorb the vital essence and artistic fertility that the Republic of Mali provided him with.
Barcelo’s African work, which springed forth during his stays through these twenty years, has inspired the exhibit Miquel Barceló. African Works which will move from the IMMA at Dublin to Malaga’s Centro de Arte Contemporáneo next Fall.
The present volume gathers a great number of works on paper, books of sketches and small canvases produced in Africa, introducing some of his most popular African images for the first time, such as portraits, everyday scenes, landscapes, and still lives. Also included are ceramics, bronze works, and big-sized paintings which were not created in Africa, but share key elements with the rest of his African experience: his trips through the Nile river, his relationship with the Malian population, their customs and markets…
Experiences all which he could greet from the house in Ségou, home of his artistic heart.
