Shaping Transformation underscores the ways in which three generations of architects have equally been major actors in the dynamic transformation of Mexico.
From its founding in 1937, 85 years ago, the Sordo Madaleno architecture firm shaped and has been shaped by modern Mexico. Shaping Transformation documents the key projects of the three generations —Juan Sordo Madaleno (1916-1985), son Javier Sordo Madaleno Bringas, and grand-sons Javier, José Juan, and Fernando Sordo Madaleno de Haro— and uncovers previously unpublished documents from the firm´s historical archive.
Painting a portrait of the forces that have changed daily life in Mexico, Shaping Transformation displays the dynamic interaction between architectural work and cultural trends that have modified cities, institutions, and landscapes.
Edited by Barry Bergdoll, a recognized specialist in the history of modern architecture, the volume brings together a cross-section of the most outstanding works by Sordo Madaleno Arquitectos. It is a colection of essays written by fifteen authors that allows readers to understand the perspectives and contexts that have accompanied some of the milestones of modern and contemporary Mexican architecture.
Exhibition at the Palacio de Iturbide, Citibanamex, CDMX February-July 2023.
